The 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Qinghai Province on 14 April 2010 was devastating and has killed over 2,200 people. It has recorded over 1,000 aftershocks. The quake has affected an area of about 30,000 square kilometers and a population of 100,000 in 12 townships in Yushu and its neighboring counties, of which the township of Yushu is found the worst hit.
Even though we cannot reach them from far distances, the HKIS presented a Charitable Open Lecture on 10 May, with all donations passed to the Hong Kong Red Cross to support the relief works.
The special charitable CPD event “Forecasting Future Housing Prices in Hong Kong” 10 May was delivered by the President Prof K W Chau, and was well attended by over 100 members and non-members. The event had raised more than HK$65,000 for the Yushu Qinghai earthquake victims. Many people donated more than what we had asked for ($300 for members and $400 for non-members). Also, many people could not turn up but still sent in their donations.
On behalf of the HKIS, the President would like to thank all of you for your support in various ways. This event was organized in a very short period of time and was made possible by a number of people working very hard behind the scene.
Once again, thank you for your contribution and support.

The purpose of the new Supplement is to clarify that Stairhood shall not form part of the Saleable Area. It should be measured separately and stated under Ancillary Accommodation. The Executive Committee of HKIS has also resolved to set up a Standing Committee on the Code of Measuring Practice chaired by Dr Lawrence Poon. The role of the Standing Committee is to help clarify the Code of Measuring Practice, and where necessary, make recommendation to the Executive Committee on updating the Supplement to the Code of Measuring Practice.

(2008.04.19) HKIS recognised that most private building owners have become more conscious on building maintenance but they are usually hesitant about the implementation for various reasons. In order to let the public have a better understanding on the subject, Building Surveying Division of HKIS is honoured to secure funding from the "The Hong Kong Coalition of Professional Services Atypical Pneumonia Charitable Trust" "香港專業聯盟非典型肺炎慈善基金" to produce an educational video, named "物業保值有何良策 樓宇維修及早計劃!". The video was launched in the Planned Building Maintenance Seminar on 19 April 2008 (sponsored by the Hong Kong Housing Society).
