An earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale struck the province of Sichuan on 12 May 2008. About 70,000 were killed, over 350,000
were injured and there are still thousands of people missing.

Achievement on Mutual Recognition of Qualification with Mainland Counterparts
(2008.08.21) The HKIS has organised a Press Conference to announce the recent achievements under CEPA arrangement and the mutual recognition of qualification with Mainland counterparts. 65 QS members have successfully registered as Cost Engineers.

Supplement to the Code of Measuring Practice
(2008.08.18) The Saleable Area Working Group and Executive Committee of the HKIS has reviewed the current Supplement to the Code of Measuring Practice and concluded how Utility Platform, A/C Plant Room and A/C Platform are categorized. A new Supplement has been issued and a Press Conference has been arranged for the announcement.

Sichuan Earthquake Relief Works by HKIS
(2008.06.05) President Yu Kam-hung responds to the Secretary for Development of Development Bureau on the relief works being provided by the HKIS towards the 5.12 earthquake disaster.

Appeal for Donations for the Victims of the Sichuan Earthquake
(2008.05.19) The Institute is appealing to all members for their support by generously donating towards a special relief fund set up for assisting the victims of the Sichuan earthquake. Donations in the form of cash or cheque (made payable to "The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors") are most welcome. For further enquiries, please contact Coody Ko at 2526 3679.

HKIS 25th Anniversary Logo Design Competition - Result announcement
A total of 43 designs were received from members. All designs were simple, creative signifying the dynamic and professional image of the Institute. After several rounds of selection, the result is now announced.

物業保值有何良策? 樓宇維修及早計劃!
(2008.04.19) HKIS recognised that most private building owners have become more conscious on building maintenance but they are usually hesitant about the implementation for various reasons. In order to let the public have a better understanding on the subject, Building Surveying Division of HKIS is honoured to secure funding from the "The Hong Kong Coalition of Professional Services Atypical Pneumonia Charitable Trust" "香港專業聯盟非典型肺炎慈善基金" to produce an educational video, named "物業保值有何良策? 樓宇維修及早計劃!". The video was launched in the Planned Building Maintenance Seminar on 19 April 2008 (sponsored by the Hong Kong Housing Society).

HKIS Visit to Beijing
(2008.03.19) 24-member HKIS delegation has paid a visit to Beijing from 16 to 18 March 2008 and met different Ministries and counterparts. The visit is fruitful and successful.

Construction Industry Safety Training Certificate ('Green Card')
The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) has been authorised by the Labour Department to issue the relevant certificate for the construction industry under section 6BA(4) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, Cap. 59, which will satisfy the safety training requirement under section 6BA(4) of the Ordinance.
