Mr. Fung is the former Commissioner for Census and Statistics of the HKSAR Government. Graduated from the University of Hong Kong, Mr. Fung joined the Census and Statistics Department as a statistician in 1974 and was appointed the Commissioner for Census and Statistics in 2005. He was President of the Hong Kong Statistical Society (HKSS) from 1994 to 1996; was awarded the Honorary Membership by the HKSS in 2005; is currently the Chairman of the Examination Board of the HKSS for the statistical professional examination, an elected member of the International Statistical Institute and a Chartered Statistician of the Royal Statistical Society. Mr. Fung has served as members and chairpersons on various advisory committees of faculties and departments of universities. He was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS) on 1 July 2011 by the HKSAR Government. He has retired from the civil service since September 2011.

Few will dispute the importance of statistics in this information era and the emphasis on developing a knowledge based society.  There are interesting stories behind different areas of official statistics which have been the cornerstone of Hong Kong in various ways.  The speaker will share his experience in various fields of official statistics through which the Government Statistical Service has made significant contributions not only to the local community but also the international community.  It is hoped that such experience will stimulate thoughts and ideas among the audience in their future endeavours.
