Hong Kong is facing a critical stage in its development where many major infrastructural projects are reaching completion and will have on-going effects on the community and environment.  The Government is also aggressively pursuing the development of areas for housing to address a housing crisis.  In the process many areas of concern are coming under threat.  This raises issues as to what sort of place Hong Kong people want in the future.

It is also taking place in a changed global environment where climate change is an internationally accepted fact which has to be addressed by all.  Climate change and deteriorating environmental quality are already affecting Hong Kong.  Scientists are pointing out problems and have identified a decision-making process which is not necessarily addressing these issues in a holistic way.

Surveyors are perceived as having limited interests, focusing on short-term financial return and driving a development process with little consideration of sustainable development issues and the long term future.  Is this true?

Ian Brownlee is a Town Planner and has worked on a wide range of development projects ranging from new towns, railway developments to concrete batching plants.  He also works with NGO’s on a wide range of community based issues. He has an interest in sustainable development issues and is a regular contributor to the Opinion page of the South China Morning Post.
