詳情 :

Mei Ho House (美荷樓), formerly part of the old Shek Kip Mei Estate, was built in 1954.  It marked the beginning of Hong Kong’s public housing policies and the change of people’s life and culture.  It is the only "Mark І" H-shaped resettlement block in Hong Kong and is now listed as a Grade historic building.  It is part of the seven buildings of Batch І of the Hong Kong Government's Revitalizing Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme.  The scheme aims to promote heritage conservation and rejuvenate historic buildings.

The major works of Mei Ho House revitalization project was to renovate and revitalize Mei Ho House to YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel, which included the strengthening works to existing buildings and re-construction of the central block, and most importantly, preservation of heritage and artifacts.

The YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel was completed for operation in August 2013.  It did not only fulfill its primary objective as to revitalize a historic building and was also crowned with several awards, including the “Special Mention of Special Architectural Award – Heritage and Adaptive Reuse in HKIA Annual Awards 2013” by the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, 2014 Dual Gold Award for National Classic Habitation on Planning and Architectural Design organized by the Architectural Society of China, Merit Award in Hotels Category at the HKIA Cross-Strait Architectural Design Awards 2015 and the Sliver Award in Heritage Conservation Category in CIOB (HK) Construction Manager of the Year Awards 2014 in Hong Kong.  It was also recognized with an Honourable Mention in the “2015 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation” (2015年聯合國教科文組織亞太區文化遺產保護獎榮譽獎」) in January 2016.

In this talk, Ir Lo and Sr Wong will brief the background and challenges for revitalization of a heritage project – Conversion of Mei Ho House as City Hostel.
