End of site visit

Lui Seng Chung is one of the remaining Chinese Tenements (i.e. "Tong-Lau") built in pre-war time. The building was built in 1931 by the Lui family and used to be a Chinese bone-setting medicine shop named "Lui Seng Chung" and living quarters for the family.

The building was designed in an Art Deco style with an integration of Chinese and Western architectural styles. The curved facade was designed to make use of the triangular site and the whole building is characterized by a square-shaped frame and decorative balustrades. The stone plaque marked of the name of medicine shop was a typical feature of pre-war Chinese tenements.

The building had been vacant since 1970s (should be 90s? People still living there in 80s) and the Antiquities and Monuments Office designated it as a Grade I historic building in 2000. The Lui family donated the building to the Government and the building was included in the "Revitalizing Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme" in 2008. The building is converted into a Chinese Medicine Healthcare Centre by Hong Kong Baptist University in 2012.

AGC Design Limited is the project architect and Conservation consultant for the revitalization project of Lui Seng Chun. Ms. Erica Chui would share her experience on the project including the planning of revitalization work, difficulties encountered and the incorporation of design to suit for the use of Lui Seng Chun as the medical healthcare centre.
