講師	:	Mr. Thomas R.H.Y.M Lai Known by his professional name Thomas Lai, Esq., the speaker graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1971 with a degree in social sciences (economics and statistics). In 1978, he was called to the English Bar and enrolled on Her Majesty’s Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand, London, Queen’s Bench Division as barrister on roll by the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn, London. Other professional qualifications of Lai include enrolled barrister of the Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia (1983), Advocate of the Supreme Court of Singapore (1991) and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London (1992). Lai has been in active and continuous private civil law practice in Hong Kong since 1978 to date with his own chambers in a wide range of disciplines including building contracts and shipping arbitration; banking and commercial litigation; company and partnership disputes; contested probate, trust and Chinese tso tong lands; international passenger and cargo claims, Warsaw Convention, conflict of laws; personal injuries and medical negligence; town planning, land resumption and compensation etc.

詳情	:	Thomas will have a brief talk on law basics relevant to surveyors, such as a brief historical review of the origin and development of English common law to understand why it is today the worldwide trusted legal system. He will also share with the participants on some practical legal knowledge such as the distinction between solicitors and barristers in the English legal system; how to find good solicitors and barristers for clients or their own legal needs, and the essence of legal knowledge in our professional duty etc.

1.	The registration fee is non-refundable and non-transferrable.
2.	A registration number will be generated for each application. The registration number is unique and non-transferrable. Members cannot proceed to payment if they do not apply the CPD event and obtain the registration number through the HKIS website.
3.	Payment can be made by cheque or by Credit Card (Shanghai Commercial Bank Ltd. / American Express). Cheques should be made payable to “SURVEYORS SERVICES LTD.”. A separate cheque or Credit Card payment instruction form is required for each event/ application. You should write down the registration number and HKIS membership number at the back of your cheque. The HKIS Secretariat will update the payment status and your application will be confirm when HKIS Secretariat receive your payment.
4.	Payment by PayPal is also acceptable. Please register in our web site before the closing date for each event. Please be reminded that if you cannot settle the payment within 7 days from the date the HKIS Secretariat accepted your registration, your registration number will be invalid and your application will be rejected. Your name will not be included in the registration list and you cannot attend the concerned CPD event. (Not applicable for site visit / social event / joint event with other organisation)
5.	An official receipt which must be presented at the event, will be available for downloading from the "CPD Profile" under Members Corners when payment is received.
6.	Incomplete or wrongly completed registration will not be processed.
7.	In the event a Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above or Black Rainstorm Warning is hoisted, the event will be postponed and a new arrangement will be announced. Should the aforesaid warnings be lowered 4 hours before the event, the event will proceed as normal.
8.	If you have not received any reply from HKIS Secretariat within 7 days of the event, you may call the Secretariat at 2526 3679 to check the progress of your registration.
9.	The HKIS reserves the right of final decision and interpretation in the case of any disputes.

1.	I confirm that I fully understand and accept the risk of joining the above visit. Under no circumstances shall The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors ("HKIS"), their staff or agents be held liable for the consequence of any accidents whether or not they are caused by the negligence of the HKIS, their staff and/or agents.
2.	Members participating in the above visit shall be in good health condition.
3.	While the HKIS has arranged Group Personal Accident insurance for members joining the above visit, members who have been accepted for joining the above visit can consider procuring an appropriate insurance policy to cover their own risks before attending the event.
4.	Claims related to COVID-19 and/or pandemics are excluded under the insurance policy procured by the HKIS.
