Designing Memory Care Facilities (with CEU Credits)

We are facing an Aging Population globally. Population over 65 years with dementia disease is very common.

The design of the built environment can have a real and tangible impact on the people within. The impact of design now being realized is in long-term care facilities designed specifically to accommodate people living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, often called memory care facilities.

Environmental design plays in the overall treatment of the dementia patients. People living with Alzheimer’s disease with the right environmental factors was as important an element in the treatment of their symptoms as the medications prescribed and the behavioral therapies employed. Designing an optimal care environment could reduce Alzheimer patients’ anxiety, depression, social withdrawal, hallucinations, and agitation.

This course will share some best practices for successfully designing these highly specialized interior spaces, as well as a few items to avoid or carefully consider. More specifically, it will explore how the selection of interior colors, use of lighting, incorporation of daylight, and specification of flooring can help create an environment that promotes calm behavior and comfort and encourages healthy socialization and safe ambulation.
