Mr. Aryan Ip obtained his Bachelor of Science in Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. After joining the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) in 2008, he conducted many researches on the lastest surveying technologies and their applications in engineering projects. His areas of research included animation, GIS and laser scanners from handheld, terrestrial to airborne. Recently, his study on the application of unmanned aerial system (UAS) in surveying and mapping attracted much attention from the industry and the study result would become an emblematic reference in the future applications of such system in Hong Kong.

UAS is widely used for various purposes in many parts of the world. There are a growing number of applications of UAS, e.g. aerial surveillance, land control, development and planning, search and rescue, photography and documentary, and surveying.

In early 2011, Survey Division of CEDD carried out a feasibility study of UAS. The real experience of operating UAS in Hong Kong helped us to understand the difficulties in running UAS in HK as well as the quality of the UAS’s products. After the completion of deliverables evaluation, the speaker would share with us.
1. UAS technologies
2. Concerns and procedures of running UAS in Hong Kong
3. Feasibility study of UAS in 2011
4. UAS products overview
5. UAS applications
6. The way forward and privilege of LiDAR survey for UAS operation
