Martin is a partner of Stephenson Harwood Solicitors and has practised in Hong Kong for 25 years. He specialises in commercial litigation, arbitration, mediation, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) proceedings in Hong Kong, Asia, and internationally with a particular emphasis on disputes arising in the Construction industry. These include claims for delay and disruption, loss and expense, defective work, insurance claims, alleged corruption, health and safety and environmental issues.

He has represented clients in dispute proceedings in England and Wales, France, the United States, Hong Kong, China, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.   Mr. Downey has considerable experience of arbitrations conducted under the auspices of the ICC, LCIA, AAA, CIETAC, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) as well as ad hoc arbitrations.
 
He has also represented clients in various Courts including the Privy Council and the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal.
 
Mr. Downey is an arbitrator and mediator and has also received appointments as legal assessor to arbitral tribunals. He sits on the Executive Committee of the CPR Institute.
