Details	:	Rachael Guan specialises in the preparation of construction and engineering contracts, and in the course of practice has advised in relation to different types of project – commercial buildings, hospitals, schools, roads and power stations. Construction projects involve a variety of technical and practical elements ranging from development of design, access to site through to selection of materials etc. Parties frequently spend their time pre-commencement focused on ensuring that these aspects of the project are agreed. However, there is likely to be pressure to commence work as soon as possible. Therefore, it is not unusual for parties to still be negotiating the contract when they need to start to procure materials, commence site preparations or even the works. Thus parties may turn to a letter of intent. This can provide flexibility, allowing the contractual agreement to be worked out separately, while facilitating the commencement of preparatory work. However, a common problem with letters of intent, which are often hastily agreed, is that it is difficult to work out exactly what either party's actual liability is – especially in terms of payment. In this talk, Rachael Guan will run through some of the common pitfalls with letters of intent, illustrated with examples from actual cases. She will also provide a useful checklist of issues to include in future letters of intent.

1.	The registration fee is non-refundable and non-transferrable.
2.	A registration number will be generated for each application. The registration number is unique and non-transferrable. Members cannot proceed to payment if they do not apply the CPD event and obtain the registration number through the HKIS website.
3.	Payment can be made by cheque or by Credit Card (Shanghai Commercial Bank Ltd. / American Express). Cheques should be made payable to “SURVEYORS SERVICES LTD.”. A separate cheque or Credit Card payment instruction form is required for each event/ application. You should write down the registration number and HKIS membership number at the back of your cheque. The HKIS Secretariat will update the payment status and your application will be confirm when HKIS Secretariat receive your payment.
4.	Payment by PayPal is also acceptable. Please register in our web site before the closing date for each event. Please be reminded that if you cannot settle the payment within 7 days from the date the HKIS Secretariat accepted your registration, your registration number will be invalid and your application will be rejected. Your name will not be included in the registration list and you cannot attend the concerned CPD event. (Not applicable for site visit / social event / joint event with other organisation)
5.	An official receipt which must be presented at the event, will be available for downloading from the "CPD Profile" under Members Corners when payment is received.
6.	Incomplete or wrongly completed registration will not be processed.
7.	In the event a Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above or Black Rainstorm Warning is hoisted, the event will be postponed and a new arrangement will be announced. Should the aforesaid warnings be lowered 4 hours before the event, the event will proceed as normal.
8.	If you have not received any reply from HKIS Secretariat within 7 days of the event, you may call the Secretariat at 2526 3679 to check the progress of your registration.
9.	The HKIS reserves the right of final decision and interpretation in the case of any disputes.
