Hong Kong and many other cities in the world are facing problems of urban heat islands (UHI) and a lack of green space. The application of green roofs and vertical greening has recently attracted much attention because they can help mitigate the adverse effects of UHI and bring nature back to the urban area. This seminar will explain the basic concepts and potential benefits of green roofs and vertical greening. Some practical examples in Hong Kong will be presented. Major design considerations and development trends will be discussed.
