Located at the new Guangzhou Central Business District and standing at a height of 530m with 111 floors, the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre (also known as the East Tower) will be the tallest building in Guangzhou as well as the last iconic development under the Zhujang Xincheng (珠江新城) Central Business District master plan. It will be a high-end mixed-use development comprising grade-A offices, serviced apartments, a luxury hotel at the top floors and a retail mall at the podium floors. Together with two other significant projects in the vicinity, the Guangzhou IFC and Canton Tower, they form an urban trinity along the Central Business District central axis and anchor the entire skyline of the new Central Business District.

For a building of this height, the structural design is certainly an important aspect of the project. The tower is designed from the outset with the intention to minimize the exterior columns for better views. The architectural design is of a crystalline form with chiseled setbacks at various levels. Its structural system is formed by eight mega columns and a central core with outriggers and belt trusses, which is unusual in China where a dual-defence system is often required for seismic design. Arup used first-principle approach and rigorous analyses for justifying the structural system. At the expert panel review of the tower structure, Arup demonstrated to the statutory experts that safety and durability of the structural system were sound hence resulting in the experts’ approval of the tower structure system. With this structural system approved by the Expert Review Panel, it is setting precedence for future seismic design for tall buildings in China Mainland following the more stringent requirements being imposed post 2008 after the earthquakes in Sichuan.

Arup also provided performance-based fire safety analyses and a holistic security solution for this world-class building while accommodating its architectural features and outlook.

At the time of visit, members will be guided to visit the site of East Tower. Members will be briefed with the planning and construction of this tallest building development in Guangzhou.
