Mr Eric P.W. CHAN is a director of EPC Engineering Consultant Ltd. He graduated from the City University London and Imperial College in the UK and was a senior structural engineer of Architectural Services Department, Government of HKSAR prior to his retirement. He has over 40 years of experience in building structures in United Kingdom and in Hong Kong and is now an in-house structural consultant to Antiquities and Monuments Office. His work in ArchSD includes the Yuen Long Theatre, Tsing Yi Complex, Hong Kong Wetland Park and Visitor Centre and many other conservation projects such as Kom Tong Hall, Yau Ma Tei Theatre. He also worked on Revitalization Scheme, Financial Assistant Scheme and other buildings in Private Partnership participation initiated by the Government of HKSAR.

Event 3BIntroduction to Historic Timber Structure

 

Timber structures have been used for more than a thousand years yet constantly been attacked by fungus, insects, environment and misuse. It is an excellent material in many aspects and has a very high strength to weight ratio.

 

This talk outlines the material properties, strength and weakness of such material in the building structures. It also touches on the survey technique, strengthening options, repair methods to rectify defects, fire aspect and preservation etc. Case studies will also be presented for the repair of the timber structures.

UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2015 (Award of Distinction) – the Revitalization of the Saltpans of Yim Tin Tsai Island, this project contributes to expanding the envelope of conservation practice to an overlooked form of industrial heritage.
