Mr S.L. LAM was a Senior Maintenance Surveyor of Architectural Services Department prior to his retirement. He has practicing conservation works since 1990 and has received a lot of local and international awards in conservation projects, including UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards: 2003 -Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 2005- Conservation of St. Joseph’s Chapel at Yim Tin Tsai Sai Kung.

With the increase in private participations in conservation projects, BSD is planning to formulate training course and CPD events to surveyors to equip them with the conservation knowledge and practical experience. Following the first two series of conservation seminars, here come the 3rd series: Practical Conservation Knowledge.

Event 3BIntroduction to Historic Timber Structure

 

Timber structures have been used for more than a thousand years yet constantly been attacked by fungus, insects, environment and misuse. It is an excellent material in many aspects and has a very high strength to weight ratio.

 

This talk outlines the material properties, strength and weakness of such material in the building structures. It also touches on the survey technique, strengthening options, repair methods to rectify defects, fire aspect and preservation etc. Case studies will also be presented for the repair of the timber structures.

UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2005 – Heritage Conservation of St. Joseph’s Chapel: A catalyst project for enhancement of the cultural landscape of the island.

 

UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2015 (Award of Distinction) – the Revitalization of the Saltpans of Yim Tin Tsai Island, this project contributes to expanding the envelope of conservation practice to an overlooked form of industrial heritage.
