Details :

The lecture will start with a brief introduction of why boundaries are required and then followed by a discussion on factors that my contribute to the quality of boundary surveys. Leading from these general discussions, the main part will be directed to the D.D. Survey in Hong Kong. How and why the D.D. Survey was carried out and what had been accomplished will be discussed. Then the lecture will cover the nature and the reliability of the D.D. Sheets. This aspect will be analysed from different angles including the relevant historical facts, the execultive guidelines for conducting the survey, the viewpoints conveyed by relevant judges in various boundary dispute cases, the findings from the contents of the D.D. Sheet by professional land surveyors and the opinions expressed in certain books on similar kind of boundary plans as the D.D. Sheet. As the D.D. Sheet forms a part of a contract, this aspect may affect the treatment of the Sheet apart from whether it is reliable or not. So, the contractual spirit will also be discussed. Lastly, the lecture will cover the survey principle of re-establishing a D.D. boundary and the boundary evidence matters. Understandably, some of the discussed items may be controversial. What delivered should only represent the speaker’s own view and therefore comments from the floor will be, and most, welcomed so as to achieve clarification on certain work principles.
