1.     Overview of Organ Donation and Transplant in Hong Kong

Organ Transplantation is the best treatment for endstage renal failure and the only treatment for other end stage organ diseases. While the medical teams have equipped with good techniques and there are good medicines for organ transplant recipients, the transplant rate is still far from reaching the demand due to lack of organs. The organ donation rate in Hong Kong is persistently low, being 5.8 per million population in 2016, while it was 40 per million population in Spain. Around Hong Kong, donation rate of many other countries are rising rapidly. There are multiple factors affecting the organ donation rate in Hong Kong, both internally within the medical and health system and externally within the community. Extensive work has been done to promote organ donation awareness and registration to central organ donation registry in the past years. Yet the result is not appealing. A more fundamental system change may be needed. The successful overseas experience may help.
