Event Name : Cladding Stones in Hong Kong: Geology, Common Problems and Considerations in Stone Selection
CPD Code : Formal Events
Speaker : Prof. LS Chan, HKU

Prof. LS Chan received his bachelor degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and masters and PhD in geology and geophysics from University of California-Berkeley. He taught geology at the University of Wisconsin for 10 years before joining the University of Hong Kong in 1994. He is currently honorary professor in Earth Sciences of HKU as well as Principal of HKU Space Community College and HKUSPACE-Po Leung Kuk Stanley Ho Community College.

Prof Chan serves on a number of public bodies. He is a Director of Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, member of the Stake-holders Advisory Group for CLP Wind Farm Project, Science Advisor of the Hong Kong Observatory, as well as former chairman of the Geological Society of Hong Kong. Over the years, he has given numerous seminars and talks on various earth science topics in the academia as well as to the general public.

His research interests include the tectonics and geology of South China, environmental magnetism, geophysics and development of innovative geophysical techniques to geological and urban studies. Among his contributions with practical relevance are the developments of applied geophysical techniques for mapping slope and subsurface ground conditions, and the infrared imaging method for screening passengers at border crossings, which was given the Best Original Paper Award by the HK Academy of Medicine 3 years ago. He also received HKU’s first University Distinguished Teaching Award in 2010.

Details :

Natural stones are preferred to be used for façade and exterior cladding because of their strength and elegance. The durability and strength of the stone, however, depends on its texture, composition and origin. Common problems encountered include staining, spalling, chipping, warping and efflorescence. The problems may arise from the geological nature of the stone, or be caused by corrosion by weather elements or local water ingress. Some stones are probably not even suitable to be used for façade cladding in Hong Kong.

Using recent case studies our speaker, Prof. Chan, will share with our members the following subjects to enhance and reinforce our knowledge : -

  • Common stone types and production process
  • Common tests and properties
  • Criteria and consideration for stone selection
  • Common problems: causes and consideration
  • Inspection and monitoring measures
