This visit will introduce visitors to the Savannah College of Art and Design’s award-winning adaptive reuse of Sham Shui Po’s former North Kowloon Magistracy building on SCAD Spotlight Day, a special occasion when prospective students and members of the public have an opportunity to experience the university through signature events and hands-on workshops. SCAD’s adaptive reuse of the Magistracy building was recognized with a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation for its redesign to accommodate the specialized professional arts education offered by SCAD. SCAD-Hong Kong offers one of the largest concentrations of art and design degree programs in the city. Professor Emily Verla Bovino will conduct a tour that addresses the history of the site, its classically-inspired modernist architecture and its heritage conservation redesign for arts and design education. The city of Savannah’s ward system, designed by James Edward Oglethorpe, is renowned as a seminal contribution to the history of Urban Planning. SCAD’s Hong Kong location is an example of SCAD’s leadership in historic preservation and adaptive reuse in the city of Savannah, where the university was founded, as well as across the globe at the over 100 facilities SCAD has restored.
