About Castle Peak Power Station and Black Point Power Station

The Castle Peak Power Station was built in the 1980s to meet the increasing electricity demand in Hong Kong and started to use coal as its primary fuel. The station consists of four 350 MW and four 677 MW generating units, together with some ancillary facilities. There is also a visitors’ centre named ElectriCity, showcasing how electricity is generated and transmitted to peoples’ homes.

Black Point Power Station is one of the world’s largest gas-fired combined-cycle power stations located near to Castle Peak Power Station. It is the first power plant in Hong Kong to use natural gas for power generation when it went into operation in 1996. The complex consists of two halls with 4 turbines in each hall, generating a capacity of 2,575 MW. In response to the government’s plan to increase the percentage of local gas generation to around 50% of the total fuel mix in 2020, CLP Power is building an additional Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) with an advanced design at the Black Point Power Station and is expected to start operations before 2020.
