With the outbreak of COVID-19 in January 2020, the local community is experiencing an unprecedented threat of health and challenge of personal hygiene practice. There are vast influx of propagation materials virtually in all social media and government channels in encouraging members of the public to maintain at all times strict personal and environmental hygiene for personal protection against infection and prevention of the spread of the disease in the community; and to stay home and refrain from going to crowded places as much as possible.

HKIS stands with its members in combating the novel coronavirus virus (the epidemic). To provide with the members a comprehensive knowledge on personal protection measures against infection control, HKIS has the honour and privilege in inviting Mr. So Nai Yeung (蘇迺揚), to give us advice on prevention measures against infection control. The talk will be on 28 February 2020, 7pm to 8pm, and with half an hour Q&A till 8:30pm.

Mr. So, as a registered nurse, has more than 20 years of hands on experience in Infection Prevention and Control (“IPC”). He has worked together with the medical experts during the time of Ebola and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome outbreak in making responses for the government, organising training talks and materials. In the past few weeks in combating the spread of COVID-19 virus, Mr. So and his team is in throttle for preparing and organising various IPC training activities including IPC simulation training for high risk exposure procedures, and IPC safety videos for the medical staff.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are known to cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe disease, and we had experienced relevant outbreaks, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in Year 2003 and 2015 respectively. Meanwhile COVID-19 was identified in Wuhan, China, and such virus -severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has not been previously identified in human.

Mr. So will give us a general introduction to COVID-19 and the relevant basic IPC preventing measures for protecting ourselves. His expertise in infection control will also inspire us to have a further and better understanding on how to positively respond to an outbreak for minimising relevant exposure.
