Speaker : Dr Brian Coutts

Dr Brian Coutts is a surveyor, planner, mediator and educator from New Zealand. He has worked as a cadastral surveyor and a protected area land use planner in central government, been a surveying and planning consultant, and taught at the University of Otago National School of Surveying being its Deputy Dean for a period. He was also Director of the University’s postgraduate Environmental Science Programme. He is a past President of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors and of the Commonwealth Association of Surveying and Land Economy and was Chair of the Cadastral Surveyors Licensing Board of NZ. Latterly he served a 4-year term as Chair of Commission 1 of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and served for 2 years on its Council.

Professions – their origin and development.

Professions are distinguished from other occupations by the status and rewards they offer when compared with other contributing members of society.  Their origins In European culture go back at least 1000 years but the number of occupations claiming the status of a profession has grown exponentially since the 19th century.  This talk identifies their origins and explains the reasons for such growth in the number of occupations claiming such status, which includes the Surveying profession.
