Associate Professor in Architectural Conservation, The University of Hong Kong

Dr. Lee Ho Yin co-founded the postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in architectural conservation at The University of Hong Kong. Before joining HKU in 1999, he was an Associate Director of an architectural practice, and has been involved in architectural projects in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Mainland China and Singapore. A well-published academic and an experienced practitioner in built-heritage conservation, he has been appointed by government agencies in Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas as an expert advisor or a consultant for conservation projects and the designation and monitoring of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. He has also been appointed to a number of heritage conservation statutory boards and committees, including the Hong Kong Government’s Antiquities Advisory Board, Tai Kwun Advisory Committee, Tai Kwun Heritage Working Group (as Chairman), and Urban Renewal Authority Board of Directors (as Non-Executive Director). In 2017, he was cited in the award certificate for the highest UNESCO conservation award for the “Blue House Cluster” revitalisation project.

This lecture takes an overview of military architectural heritage through history from around the world and in Hong Kong, explaining the types with interesting anecdotes and ending with an analysis of the challenges of conserving military heritage sites in Hong Kong. The speaker has first-hand experience in military built heritage as an academic in architectural conservation and as a former army sergeant in special operations.
