Alice Chan is the Director of Architectural Project Unit Limited (APU) and has over sixteen years of professional experience in Hong Kong and PRC projects. Alice is devoted to contributing to the architectural industry and our society. She is the assessor of various professional accreditation progrrammes and is active in lectures and publications on architecture.

APU provides Architectural Design and BIM consultancy for the First Stage of Tseung Kwan O Desalination Plant which covers a site area of over 50,000 square meters with more than 15 buildings for administration and associated facilities. The water production of the plant can reach 135,000 cubic meters per day equivalent to 5% of daily fresh water consumption in Hong Kong, with future expansion to ultimate capacity of 270 Mld.

Acting as the Project Architect and Authorized Person, APU has a crucial role in Architectural and Landscaping Design of the desalination plant from design concept, submission of plans, to production of drawings.

 

由香港水務署執行的計劃,將軍澳 (TKO) 第137區使用返滲透技術,提供擬議海水化淡廠的第一階段。該項目設有超過15個獨立處理海水的建築物,水生產能力將達到每天135,000立方米 (m3),相當於香港每日淡水消耗量的5%,未來將擴大至270, 000立方米的最終產能。

APU為是次專案提供建築及顧問服務。項目採用了REVIT, BIM360雲端及TWINMOTION等最新的BIM技術。在過去幾年受疫情的影響下,都能維持原有進度,並全面提升了專案效率。

 

Idea of DFMA Façade

DFMA panels are the main feature of the façade design. The modules have some magic figures to make it work.

When we talk about the construction of plant buildings, we need to consider the difficulties in moving the equipment after completion of the building. Therefore, if we can move in the equipment and plants as early as possible, this will greatly improve the whole construction and operation process.

DFMA stands for Design for Manufacture and Assembly. DfMA, as its self-explanatory meaning, is an innovative design approach based on a theory of easy assembly. On the other hand, it is a LEGO prototype- like design concept of using modular sizes, repetitive units and standard types in the building system.

The implementation of DfMA in building for the desalination plant is very successful and has achieved the following benefits:

  1. Quality assurance for the panels at factory
  2. Reduce risks for site works
  3. Quick assembling for building parts

With a strong belief of “Architecture can impact the environment”, we promote the nature and environmental awareness as the key elements of our design theme.

 

DfMA 可供製造及製配設計立面的理念

這個項目的混凝土DfMA 面板是立面設計的主要特徵。設計這些組件時,有很多數字上、安裝上的考慮。

海水化痰廠內有很多大型的設備,我們需要考慮建築物建成後移動及安裝設備的困難。因此,如果我們能夠儘早搬入設備,這將大大改善整個建造和營運過程。

DfMA 代表製造和裝配設計。 DfMA,顧名思義,是一種基於易組裝理論的設計方法。另一方面,它是一種類似樂高積木原型的設計理念,在建築系統中使用模塊化尺寸、重複單元和標準類型。

DfMA 在海水淡化廠建設中的實施非常成功,並取得了以下效益:

1) 工廠面板的質量保證

2) 降低現場工程風險

3) 快速組裝建築零件

我們堅信“建築可以影響環境”,將自然和環境意識作為我們設計主題的關鍵元素。

 

Green Building Design

In designing modern buildings in the countryside, there always comes a challenge of minimizing the visual impact of the manmade features in nature. Our design maximized the use of greening by adding green roofs and green walls so that the desalination plant can peacefully blend in with the surrounding countryside.

Selection of environmental- friendly building materials such as durable Fairface concrete for facade, recycled building materials and systems is also adopted to reduce carbon emission and achieve sustainability in the long run. The titled PV panels at roof provide electricity for the desalination plant.

 

綠色建築設計

在偏遠地區設計建築時,總是希望能盡量減少建築對整個環境視覺影響的挑戰。我們的設計通過增加綠色屋頂和綠化,最大限度地利用綠化,使海水淡化廠可以與周圍的環境和諧地融為一體。

採用環保建築材料,例如耐用的淸混凝土外牆、再生建築材料和系統,以減少碳排放並實現長期可持續發展。屋頂上的光伏面板也為海水淡化廠提供部份的電力供應。
