Details :

Trunk Road T2 and Cha Kwo Ling Tunnel (collectively “Trunk Road T2”) forms the middle section of Route 6, connecting the Central Kowloon Route on the west and the Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel on the east.  Upon commissioning of the entire Route 6, journey time during peak hours between Tseung Kwan O Town Centre and Yau Ma Tei will be substantially reduced from about the present 65 minutes to 12 minutes.

Trunk Road T2 is 3.4 km long.  Its main component is a 2.4 km twin-tube sub-sea tunnel routed underneath the seabed of Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter being constructed with two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).  Each TBM is 14 m in height, approximately three double deck buses stacked together; and 120 m in length, approximately the length of six cars of train.  The TBMs are equipped with a number of state-of-the-art innovative technologies to cope with various engineering challenges in the construction of the sub-sea tunnels.

In this virtual site visit, the Project Team of Trunk Road T2 will present the applications of various technologies in relation to both TBM and Drill-and-blast tunnelling, including LiDAR scanning for enhanced productivity in survey work, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning for real-time 3D monitoring of sensitive structures with high accuracy and reliability, and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) for comprehensive ground settlement surveys especially in areas of difficult access.
