Event Name : Visit to Q-Leak Underground Water Mains Leak Detection Training Centre
CPD Code : Formal Events
Speaker : Ir Dr Wallace LAI
BSc (Hons.), PhD, MHKIE, FHKCI

Dr. Lai is an Associated Professor and Associate Head (Teaching) in Department of Land Surveying and Geo-informatics of HK PolyU. He specialized in teaching, research and consultancy of nondestructive testing, survey and evaluation to investigate unseen underground utility and engineering structures with technologies like ground penetrating radar, infrared thermography and acoustic methods. As a material engineer, he has been working on nondestructive testing and near-surface geophysics for imaging and diagnosing invisible members and hazards in underground utility networks, concrete/fibre reinforced infrastructures, or simply the rationale ‘SEEING THE UNSEEN’ in construction, and especially the underground mysterious world. Dr. Lai has been serving as a guest scientist at the Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin, Germany since 2010, initiating, organizing and lecturing in the annual NDT-CE workshop in BAM. He organized and chaired 16th Ground Penetrating Radar Conference in Hong Kong in 2016. He also designs, builds and operates the first underground utility survey lab in the world in 2014.

Restricted by the limited space in lab, Dr. Lai was commissioned by Water Supplies Department of HKSARG in 2019 to design and build the world’s first full-scale 2500 sq.m. training centre of leak detection and diagnosis in Tsing Yi, on which a MoU of teaching, R&D and public engagement was signed in Nov 2021. Recent interest of Dr. Lai extends to work with historians to unfold and model the terrain of hidden and lost WWII heritage sites, like pillbox and trenches, built by the British and Japanese using a range of geo-spatial technologies including air-borne and terrestrial LiDAR. Also, over the years, he has been working with psychologists for measuring cognitive biases during human-machine interaction to improve the team decision making process for diagnosis of underground problems such as pipe leak and road subsidence. He chairs various committees, working groups and task force for establishing a set of six utility survey specifications for Government’s accreditation since 2017. He is also a technical assessor for the Hong Kong Accreditation Services, Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government. He authors 80+ journal and conference papers and is the PI of 40+ research and consultancy projects amounted over HK$45M.
